Scholarly Explanation

The one who is above any evil, defect and deficiency due to His greatness and grandeur.

He is Allah, other than whom none has the right to be worshipped. The King, the Holy, as-Salam, the Giver of Security, the Ever-Watcher, the Almighty, the Compeller, the Supreme. Glory be to Allah! [High is He] above all that they associate as partners with Him.

[al-Hashr (59): 23]

Prophetic Traditions

Allah the Mighty and Majestic said: 'Pride is My cloak and greatness is My garment. Whoever competes with Me in either of them, I will throw into the Fire.'

Al-Mutakabbir alone deserves supreme greatness and pride—it is exclusively His attribute. Any human who claims it commits a grave sin.

Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه·Sahih Muslim 2620
Sahih

لاَ يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ مَنْ كَانَ فِي قَلْبِهِ مِثْقَالُ ذَرَّةٍ مِنْ كِبْرٍ

No one who has an atom's weight of arrogance in his heart will enter Paradise.

Greatness and supreme pride are exclusively for Al-Mutakabbir—when humans claim these attributes, it is arrogance that leads to ruin.

Abdullah ibn Mas'ud رضي الله عنه·Sahih Muslim 91
Sahih

Scholarly Insights

Al-Mutakabbir is the One who is rightfully proud and supreme. Unlike human arrogance, which is a false claim to greatness, Allah's pride is the truth—He alone is truly supreme. For humans, the share in this name is to be proud only of their faith and servitude to Allah.

Al-GhazaliAl-Maqsad al-Asna

Al-Mutakabbir sees everything else as small and insignificant compared to His majesty. This is not unjust, because it is the truth—everything truly is infinitely small before Him.

Ibn al-QayyimNuniyyah
